Bowater has announced that the Great Northern Paper mill in Millinocket is for sale, and has promised to invest $220 million in its East Millinocket mill. Modernizations at the East Millinocket facility could result in the loss of 200 to 300 of the plant\u27s 639 jobs. The sale of the mill underscores the importance of recreation to the future of Millinocket. The Millinocket mill employs 800, pays $7 million in property taxes and had a 1996 payroll of $106 million.
