The Maine Land Use Regulation Commission on July 17 voted 4-0 to approve a conditional permit for a third electric generator for the edge of an underground aquifer on Monhegan Island. LURC placed 282 acres of the watershed in an aquifer protection district in 1990, and some residents see the recent vote as an about-face. Zoe Zanidakis of The Monhegan House argued that a new power source was essential to her business, and said her proposed generator would exceed standards for safety and pollution. The LURC staff recommended denying Zanidakis\u27 proposal, but LURC Executive Director John Williams encouraged the board to issue a permit with nine conditions, including a five-year expireation.
