Hospitals throughout Maine are creating birthing centers that allow women to give birth in revamped hospital rooms complete with oak furniture, jacuzzis and matching wallpaper. Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford spent around $500,000 on its center, while Maine Medical Center in Portland completed its Family Birthing Center for roughly $250,000. The birthing centers are part of the struggle to remain competitive and lure pregnant patients. Competition among hospitals is behind a long-running battle over maternity wards between Mid Coast Hospital and Park View Hospital, both in Brunswick. Details
