By the time through hikers on the Appalachian Trail reach Maine from the south, they have logged nearly 2,000 miles. Once in Maine, the AT passes through a vast industrial forest that is unlike anything elsewhere on the trail. Large landowners, most of them forest-products companies, in 1995-96 intend to harvest in 26 townships through which the AT passes, with single operations involving anywhere from 525 to 7,000 acres. Around ten percent of the AT in Maine has seen cutting near its corridor. Details
