Archaeology is a current class project at the Wayne Elementary School, with fourth and fifth graders leading the way. Theresa Kerchner, the teacher who organized the project, was looking for a way to make history more relevant. The classes began searching for historic sites in town that illustrated the early history of Wayne, an agricultural community settled in the late 1700s. The students participated in excavations at the site of a former blacksmith shop and Mark Hedden, the state\u27s archaeologist, recently met with them to discuss their finds
