Maine has a secondary seat belt law, which means that a violator must be in violation of another statute before being pulled over. Maine currently ranks 33rd in seat belt usage in the county, with a rate of 61 percent as opposed to a national average of 68 percent. For the next five years, states which exceed the national average for seat belt usage will receive grants based in the amount the federal government saved on medical costs in those states.
