The amount of campaign funds available to candidates considering running for the Legislature in 2000 under the fledgling Clean Election Act has been announced by the Maine Commission on Governmental Ethics and Election Practices. Candidates for the Senate will receive up to $38,730 in a contested general election and up to $13,002 in a contested primary. House candidates will be eligible for $9,756 in a general election and $3,423 in a contested primary. George Christie, executive director of the Maine Citizen Leadership Fund, called the figures encouraging.
