News & Issues piece on the U.S. Naval Air Station (NAS) in Brunswick, which a union claims might be closed. Of immediate concern is the reallocation of $900,000 in runway repair money from the base to fund the renovation of offices at the Naval submarine base in Groton, Conn., according to Chris Wagner, president of Local R1-77 of the National Association of Government Employees. Wagner\u27s union is trying to mobilize Maine\u27s congressional delegation to help keep the base open. The NAS in Brunswick is the only active Naval airfield in the Northeast and is home to 4,300 Navy personnel. It provides jobs to 400-plus civilian employees and supports a $487 million payroll
