North by North East piece briefly reporting that Atlantic Aquafarms, of Franklin, and Island Aquaculture, on Swans Island, are sharing a $500,000 federal grant that will allow them to set up cod hatcheries and experimental pens. Interest in cod farming has exploded because of the decline in the cod fishery. Raising cod is of interest to fish farmers because there is a market shortage of cod, which would make the industry profitable. David Miller of Atlantic Aquafarms notes that under the grant 60 percent of the young cod will go to the Maine Department of Marine Resources for research and release into the sea.
