The Talk of Maine piece on efforts to eliminate Maine\u27s Land Use Regulation Commission, which has been responsible for regulating development in Maine\u27s North Woods since 1971. Legislators transfered the issue of LURC\u27s future to members of a new commission appointed by Gov. Paul LePage, Senate President Kevin Ray and House Speaker Robert Nutting. Those who support getting rid of LURC want to transfer the governance of permitting and zoning back to the counties and residents of the Unorganized Territories . But opponents feel that the more than 16,000 square miles of largely undeveloped land in the North Woods is of interest to all Maine residents, not just the people who live in the region
