Article on wetlands ecologist Aram Calhoun and her efforts to protect frogs and salamanders and their habitats, especially vernal pools. Calhoun worked with Sally Stockwell, director of conservation at Maine Audubon Society, to fund-raise and begin Maine Audubon\u27s Very Important Pool (VIP) project to recruit and train volunteers to gather physical data about the pools. Thanks to Calhoun\u27s efforts, Maine now leads the nation in cataloguing its vernal pools and protecting them. Guidelines for timber harvesting in the vicinity of these pools have been sanctioned by the Maine Forest Service, and measures to preserve the pools are being incorporated into many municipal plans.
