English colonists brought the common tansy (Tanacetum vulgare), a member of the aster family, to Maine. The plant, which has a distinctive camphor smell, has run wild and is common along roadsides. In some states, though not Maine, the plant has been declared a noxious weed. A related plant, tansy ragwort, is lethal to livestock and humans
