Article about Mahoosuc Notch, the most challenging single stretch on the entire 2,160-mile Appalachian Trail (AT), which just happens to be in Maine. The route through this gnarled notch just north of Bethel is generally considered to be the most difficult mile on the AT. Throughout the notch there\u27s the constant problem of footing. The great cleft is a gorge with 300-foot-high glacier-carved granite walls between Fulling Mill Mountain and Mahoosuc Mountain. The toughness of the notch can be as much mental as physical. The trail poses many difficulties and there are leaps between rocks that require a running start and a sudden stop on the other side
