North by East piece on efforts to restore a colony of murres on Matinicus Rock. The uninhabited island, some twenty miles off Rockland, already hosts colonies of once-extirpated puffins, razorbills, and guillemots. Dr. Stephen Kress, a biologist with the National Audubon Society, is using an innovative method to lure the murres--a solar-owered CD player imitating a full-fledged colony of murres. Kress explains that murres were among the first seabird species exterminated from Maine islands, disapperaing back in the egging and plume-hunting days
