Because of the success of the Land for Maine\u27s Future Board, created in 1987 and entrusted with $35 million to save outstanding examples of the state\u27s landscape, the editors of Down East have awarded the board with the 1996 Down East Environmental Award. Nearly 60,000 acres have been put aside for posterity, including Mount Kineo, the Kennebunk plains, a beach in Stockton Springs, and bold shoreland in Cutler. Many of the acquisitions have resulted from the negotiating talents of Kent Womack, executive director of the Nature Conservancy.
