The majority of farms in Maine are either small, several acre operations that are often located near large population areas or large producers with larger seasonal staffs located in less expensive rural regions of the state. Small farmers face the challenges of buying their own health insurance or going without coverage and finding affordable land near heavily populated areas with high land values. Many small farmers end up leasing farmland and living elsewhere which means that all their hard work does not end up building equity for their future.
