Focus: Augusta-Waterville piece on the boom in artisanal cheese, which has created new opportunities for sheep and goat milk producers in the region. Keith Morgan-Davie and Beth Whitman, founders of the Maine Micro-dairy Development Cooperative (MMDC) in Whitefield, believe that educating and supporting small-scale sheep and goat dairies throughout the state will help local supply keep up with demand from boutique cheesemakers. Funded in part by grants from the Maine Department of Agriculture and the Maine Technology Institute, one way the MMDC hopes to help new dairies is by providing mobile milking units as a low-cost option for small-scale producers.
