Portland real estate broker Bill Umbel has invested more than half a million dollars to open a rock club in Portland, a risky proposition. Portland is generally not on the touring circuit and many clubs have come and gone. Getting out an audience is also a gamble. An alternative arts venue, the Space Gallery, opened when the Skinny closed, but director Nat May says it will never be self-sustaining.
