Competition is heating up among large grocery chains, which is further exacerbated by the increasing availability of a variety of food items in drug and convenience stores. Hannaford Bros. Co., Shaw\u27s Supermarkets, Wal-Mart supercenters, and a soon-to-be-built Stop & Shop are competing for the southern Maine grocery dollar.
