The University of Maine received $27 million in 1995 federal research grants, less than any other state university in the country. Most of the grants, which include a 10-15 percent private contribution, came in sums under $100,000. This year research will get a boost from the National Science Foundation\u27s Experimental Program to Stimulate Corporate Research, but Maine\u27s inability to raise matching funds has forced administrators to aim no better than 9th-worst in America for 1996. The University of Southern Maine has done better, obtaining $16 million in federal funds to support a much smaller research infrastructure. Details
