In 1900, the people of Criehaven gave Carl Anderson and his family free land on the island, so that his children would fill out the Criehaven school. Anderson\u27s descendents have lived on the island ever since. In 1925, the island decided to become an unorganized territory. The year-round community dwindled away after World War II, and even if the island were to restore the pillars of its once-vibrant community -- regular boat service, a school, and a post office -- it is doubtful if anyone would move back.
