The Maine Working Waterfront Coalition helped get two referendum questions passed in 2005, assuring that waterfront used for fishing could be protected through a statewide program. The group was created to preserve access to the coast for marine-dependent industries. The Island Institute began a community mapping project in 2005 to determine how much waterfront access remained. Results were included in the report The Last 20 Miles: Mapping Maine\u27s Working Waterfront. With details on waterfront projects in Scarborough, Bristol, Friendship, St. George, Vinalhaven, Isle au Haut, and Beals Island
