Bangor, Stonington, and Islesboro are all shaped by the influences of Penobscot Bay. Although it serves as the downtown for most of eastern Maine, Bangor is striving to re-connect itself to a working Penobscot waterfront. In Stonington, urchin diving has followed fishing (and before that, granite quarries) in a century-long sequence of economic booms. Traditionally a small-boat harbor, its pier has increased from 65 to 103 working boats since 1986, and is highly adaptive to new sea industries. Because Stonington is a dry town, it is unlikely to be overrun with tourism.
