According to Karen Simone of the Northern New England Poison Center at Maine Medical Center in Portland, blood tests can find drugs that urine tests cannot, as well as show whether a methadone patient has taken a prescribed dose. Identifying patients who are using other drugs or are not consuming their methadone could help cut down on diversion since these patients would lose their take-home privileges, a practice that is at the root of virtually all of the diversion.
