Cover Story piece on the Bates Dance Festival at Bates College in Lewiston, which is now in its 20th year and is one of the three top contemporary dance festivals in the nation. Laura Faure became director of the festival in 1987, at a time when the modern dance program had acquired more debt than reputation. The festival has helped launch careers and commissioned new works by some of the most innovative choreographers of the day.
