The noticeable absence of out gay and lesbian instructors also bothers Richard. In 1998, after three years of criticism about the lack of racial diversity among Portland\u27s teaching staff, all but about six of the city\u27s 606 educators are white. McCalmon admitted she did not know of a single out gay or lesbian instructor currently on staff. Sue Clark, school committee chair, said McCalmon can\u27t recruit gay teachers because it would mean asking candidates about their sexual orientation, which would be illegal
