Long Island seceded from Portland and incorporated as a town in 1993. Residents of the town govern through the town meeting, and Long Island is struggling with the form its government will ultimately take. The major problem on the island is the enormous underground tank farm built by the U.S. Navy in 1942, which occupies more than 160 acres in the center of the island. The owner of the tank farm, Northland Residential Corp. of Massachusetts, is in the process of bringing the site up to standards set by the Maine Department of Environmental Protection. Some islanders say the DEP\u27s oversight of the cleanup has been inadequate. Details
