First in a two-part series on mercury in the environment entitled Mercury Rising. The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife in 1993 undertook a study called the Regional Environmental Monitoring and Assessment Program. Based on the results of mercury testing on fish caught in 125 of Maine\u27s lakes and ponds, state officials issued an advisory against consuming more than six fish per year.
