The true-crime story centers on Canadian-born Mary Bean, whose real name was Berengera Caswell. Caswell\u27s body was found in a Saco stream in 1850. She had been working in the mills prior to her death, which was caused by a botched abortion. The book explores abortion, female economic independence, and pre-marital sex in the mid-19th century. DeWolfe will present a reading on March 6 at the University of New England in Portland.
