Several of the reprints are inscribed to him by the authors. A photocopy of Wiley's article about Mrs. Phoebe Yates Pember, the hospital matron of the Confederate Chimborazo Hospital in Richmond, Virginia, describes her efforts on behalf of the wounded of Chimborazo Hospital, commonly known as "Hospital 2" in reports.Biographical/Historical Note: Bell Irvin Wiley, born in Halls, Tennessee, on January 5, 1906, became an authority on military history, specializing in the American Civil War. He received his BA at Asbury College in 1928 and his PhD from Yale in 1933. He began teaching history in 1934, at State Teachers College (now the University of Southern Mississippi). He married Mary Frances Harrison in 1938; they had two children. He taught at the University of Mississippi, Louisiana State University, and Emory University. Wiley died on April 4, 1980, in Atlanta, Georgia. During his lifetime, he published many books of popular history and scholarly works documenting the lives of the "plain people.
