Michael Bies' zwischen Literaturwissenschaft und Wissenschaftsgeschichte angesiedelte Studie beschäftigt sich mit den vielfältigen Bezügen zwischen dem ästhetisch-poetologischen Ideal einer 'lebendigen Darstellung' im späten 18. und 19. Jahrhundert und der Zielsetzung einer angemessenen 'Darstellung des Lebendigen' im naturwissenschaftlichen Diskurs derselben Zeit. Anhand genauer Lektüren von Kants kritischen Schriften, Goethes Studien zur Naturforschung und Alexander von Humboldts naturwissenschaftlichen Werken zeigt Bies zunächst, wie die Verbindung beider Ideale bei Kant als theoretisches Dilemma exponiert wird.
