A new species, Prionospio rikardoi n. sp. has been identified from circalittoral soft bottoms of Basque coast (SE Bay of Biscay). The new species is characterized by having dorsal crests in several of their body segments as well as four pairs of smooth, apinnate branchiae on chaetigers 2-5. In the present paper, the new species is described, illustrated and compared to related species. In addition, and identification key is provided for all know valid Prionospio Malmgren, 1867 species possessing only apinnate branchiae beginning on chaetiger 2.
