The literature on current measures of global job satisfaction is reviewed and several problems with existing measures are highlighted. A new measure of the construct of global job satisfaction (the Global Employment Situation Satisfaction scale; GESS) is then proposed which takes previous shortcomings into account. Next, a rigorous investigation of the five-item GESS is conducted to assess the reliability and validity of this new measure. The four sample study of the GESS supports its use to assess the construct of global job satisfaction. The results are discussed and directions for future research are noted
