Commissioning composers to write for the American wind band is of paramount importance in the development and growth of the wind band repertoire. The purpose of this essay was to examine and document the process of commissioning a work for wind band from concept through premiere. This paper provides a description of the processes involved so that others may be encouraged to undertake this endeavor.This essay focuses on three stages of development that occur during the creation of a new work: (1) conceptual, (2) production, (3) and performance preparation. The three-stage process is documented through the commissioning of a composer to write a new work for wind band
