The purpose of this doctoral essay is to provide a performer’s guide to Sequenza I by Luciano Berio. Despite being considered a standard piece in the flute repertoire, Sequenza I is often avoided because of its challenging notation, sudden dynamic shifts and unique harmonic language. This doctoral essay includes an analysis of the structure and compositional elements of the piece, as well as a detailed performance guide that addresses the issues of notation in both editions of the piece. Additionally, there are performance suggestions provided by leading flutists who were interviewed by the author.
