This article states that there has not been an attempt to influence land-use policy through federal regulation in the U.S. since 1973, and discusses what measures need to be taken within the nation to address land use and global climate change issues. Urban sprawl is discussed in many aspects, including its effect on personal and environmental health. The historical context through which our comprehension of development and private property is examined, including the foundational principles of philosopher John Locke. Smart growth is examined as a much needed dictum in the American consciousness
