Different analyses have been applied to the distinction between CV and CVC syllabic reduplication in Hiaki (Yaqui), which has a complex system of reduplicative allomorphy. Haugen (2003) proposes that CVC reduplication is dependent on the syllable structure of the verb (an onset consonant of the second syllable of a verb stem cannot serve as a coda in a reduplicant), but Harley and Leyva (2009) regard CVC reduplication as copying CVC roots. This paper demonstrates that neither approach is fully adequate to account for all cases of syllabic reduplication in Hiaki.
