For Europe to achieve the targets to decarbonise the energy system, there is a need for a storage technology that can support intermittent power dispatch from solar and wind. Pumped-storage is a mature technology with high efficiency and abilities to store a large amount of energy. It has the capabilities to support intermittency by pumping water up to higher reservoirs and can create additional consumption in surplus periods of intermittent generation. This gives the opportunity to increase the European trade of electricity towards 2050. This thesis explores the likelihood of pumped-storage to be implemented in the Norwegian hydropower plants.
