Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is the most frequent cause of new cases of blindness among adults aged 20-74 years. Nearly all patients with Type 1 diabetes and greater than 60% of patients with Type 2 diabetes will develop retinopathy within the rst two decades of the disease. Nitric oxide (NO) has been shown to play a role in the progression of DR, contributing to neuronal dysfunction and the breakdown of the blood-retina barrier early stages of the disease.
