This study examines the differences between three types of entrepreneurs (homegrowns, boomerangs and transplants) and their ability to leverage social capital resources during start-up in the manufacturing belt. The study utilizes a mixed methods approach using semi-structured interviews of 11 entrepreneurs representing the three types and an online survey completed by 113 entrepreneurs residing in the cities of Columbus, OH, Dayton, OH and Indianapolis, IN. The study examines the depth and variety of social network penetration by each entrepreneurial type and their ability to leverage social capital in terms of information, physical resources, funding and collaboration/referrals for start-up and initial growth.
