The rapidly increasing power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of organic solar cells (OSCs) above 10% were made possible by concerted international research activities in the last few years, aiming to understand the processes that lead to the generation of free charge carriers following photon absorption. Despite these efforts, many details are still unknown, especially how these processes can be improved already at the drawing board of molecular design.
