The government of the People\u27s Republic of China (PRC) claims that China is a unified, multinational state. Through its history education curriculum and other efforts, it also seeds to create a strong overarching Chinese identity. The Uyghurs are the largest nationality group in Xinjiang, the westernmost region of China, and have a strong nationalist movement. The history curriculum suggest that there is little room for an independent Uyghur identity within China, and also counter Uyghur nationalist arguments.
