With global tiger populations in sharp decline, conservationists in India created several tiger reserves meant to separate humans and tigers. However, many exist where there have been well established human settlements. This paper examines the impacts of this protectionist conservation on local people in the Melghat Tiger Reserve in Maharashtra. The research shows that economic limitations and coercive relations with the officials running the reserve have severely impoverished and disenfranchised the local people. A people-oriented conservation strategy is suggested to help alleviate the situation and improve environmental conditions in the area
