In this paper, I discuss and analyze first the nature of writing: How it is analyzed, what characteristics a good writing system should have, and so forth. In the second part, I apply these thoughts to Chinese, which has a rather odd partially phonetic writing system. I discuss views of Chinese characters as the basis of a writing system, and then discuss the relative strengths and weaknesses of 4 different phonetic writing schemes for Chinese (Wade-Giles, Hanyu Pinyin, Bopomofo, and Gwoyeu Romatzyh)
