My comps project provides a cross-linguistic overview of vowel harmony in the world\u27s languages, followed by a closer examination of the way that vowel harmony occurs in the Ainu language. I took a set of problematic data, which had previously been analyzed to argue that vowel harmony in Ainu occurs in a way not consistent with the overall theory, and reanalyzed it in terms of previously attested phonological constraints that are consistent with a cross-linguistic theory of vowel harmony. I used an Optimality Theory framework for my analysis
