This paper examines the work of Aimé Césaire, the political and cultural father of modern Martinique. I compare Césaire\u27s poetry, famous for its impact on the cultural awakening of the black francophone world, and Césaire\u27s relationship with the French Communist Party( (PCF). Though communism can be a useful lens for advocating the decolonization of the French Empire, Césaire ultimately decides that the universalist approach of the PCF does not account for the particularities of the black identity
