In the mid twentieth century, Britain was experiencing the beginnings of decolonization and heightened nationalistic movements from many of its colonial holdings and protectorate territories. Specifically, in 1952 the Mau Mau Uprising in Kenya highlighted colonial desires to be independent and exiled from the Empire. Simultaneously, the case study of the Mau Mau also shows the British government attempting to preserve the spirit of Empire.
