In what was intended to be the image proper (suggested by tape still affixed to negative) a four items of ethnographic interest, arranged on a light-colored fringed tablecloth ornamented with a double stripe, and backed with a neutral backdrop. The items include a long wooden mortar with a rounded end; a wooden pestle with a pointed end, and two small round stones, each flattened on one side. The larger image offers clues about the surround in which Gay made her ethnographic images. At the left is visible an ornamental bedstead with a round brass finial. On it lies a measuring device. Tacks that stretch the neutral backdrop are visible along its sides, and the wooden legs of the table holding the artifacts are also visible
