For several years in the mid-1970s it appeared the Trident submarine program might be the most controversial weapon ever built--it was subjected to widespread reports of cost overruns, Navy criticisms of Electric Boat Company\u27s construction errors, and threats to build the submarines in other countries. Such did not become a reality, partly because the MX missile absorbed much of the previous criticism of strategic weapons programs and partly because both the Navy and Electric Boat solved many of the problems plaguing the system
