A review of the history and development of brief therapy and the currently used models as well as current and past research trends was conducted. This was followed by a review of the results of outcome studies of brief and time-limited therapy. The review was limited to individual, adult, outpatient psychotherapy studies. It was hypothesized that brief therapy is as effective as other currently used modes of psychotherapy. This is supported by a review of the published literature. Implications of this finding are discussed, as well as directions for future research
